Here's a concept for the center of downtown, and idea that combines a number of thoughts about the center of town: 1) increase green space by creating a larger central park area; 2) change traffic flow to two-way, which loses a few parking spaces but not that many; 3) adjust curbs to allow new traffic flow and create parallel parking spaces.

Yes, I had the same idea for the expanded park with the parking at the south end. I have a different idea about traffic flow. My thought was to make the traffic flow one way around the Post Office Bldg in a counter clockwise direction and keep that block of Main one way as it is now. This will allow people coming up from the south to enter the parking area near the proposed park. I think the two way flow at the north end of the PO Bldg and the one way flow at the south end is going to cause problems as well as the tight space with a lot of people coming and going begs for it to be one way. Bi-directional on N Main and Gates seems reasonable to me.
Also, perhaps a new Advance Transit bus shelter along with a bike rack could be installed adjacent to the Post Office Building, replacing the wood bulletin board?
I like the idea a lot, would agree with one way around PO, but would suggest clockwise, diagonal parking on North side. Keep one way on North Main for the time being, but the incresed green space would make a BIG difference for such a small footprint.
Clockwise rotation would cause people
people coming from the south on S Main to go left at Gates. Counter-clockwise would allow them to make a right and go around the PO to enter the downtown. This assumes Main remains one way in front of the Coolidge.
